Black Cumin, commonly known as Kala ‘Jeera’ or ‘Zeera is a high-value herbaceous spice that grows in Kashmir. It is the second most popular spice in the world after black pepper. It mostly grows in Gurez, Machill, Tangdar, Pulwama, Karnah, Karewas of Budgam, and Srinagar. It is widely used for culinary, flowering, perfumery, and carminative purposes.

Kala Zeera is not readily available even in the markets of Srinagar. Most of the shops sell Afghani Zeeri which is cheaper than authentic Kashmiri Zeera.
