What Do Kashmiris Wear in Winter?

Kashmiri people wear different kinds of things based on the season and month. Kashmiri clothes holds a unique charm especially during the winter months.

What Do Kashmiri Women Wear

In the Winter season, Kashmiri women usually wear layers of woolen clothes like woolen suits, sweaters followed by an oversized garment called Pheran or phiran or feran. It’s made of different materials like cashmilon, Raffal, or tweed. Instead of a Pheran, some prefer to wrap a shawl: Pashmina, Raffal, or in Cashmilon material. Others either wear a plain or embroidered coat or a jacket.

  • In the Spring and Autumn season, women usually wear spun suits or summer suits with a sweater. In the Summer season, women wear cotton suits.

What Do Kashmiri Men Wear

In the winter season, men also wear the traditional oversized garment called pheran. A portable firepot called the kangri is usually kept inside the pheran. Some men also use the Dussa – a long traditional shawl. If not a shawl or pheran, then coats, jackets, or waist coats in woolen materials keep them warm. The older generation is also spotted wearing Kashmiri woolen caps such as Karakul, Pakol cap, sozni caps, kani caps, etc., made from natural materials like sheep fur, pashmina, etc.
