How Gyawun Began

While www.gyawun.com was first registered on November 27, 2015, the roots of Gyawun trace back over a century — to the year 1904.

Our story begins with Ghulam Ali Hakak, our great-grandfather, who started his journey in 1904 in Srinagar, Kashmir. He was deeply involved in dealing, sourcing, and exporting Kashmiri art and handicrafts, connecting local artisans with traders across India and abroad.

From stone and turquoise jewellery to shawls, carpets, embroidery, wood carving, needlework, and pashmina, his work reflected the finest craftsmanship Kashmir had to offer. Built on honesty, quality, and global trust, this legacy laid the foundation for what we stand for today.

The Modern Chapter: Gyawun

More than a century later, that same spirit found a new expression.

Gyawun didn’t begin as an online store. In fact, “Gyawun” means songs in Kashmiri, and music is where our journey began.

Gyawun started as a platform to promote Kashmiri music and local artists — sharing original tracks, highlighting singers, and giving space to voices often unheard. As the platform grew, so did our purpose.

We began telling positive, real stories from Kashmir — stories about culture, people, art, and everyday life in the valley, moving away from narratives of conflict and negativity.

From Stories to Store

The transition to eCommerce was a natural next step.

On September 19, 2017, we received our first-ever order — a T-shirt that read, “I Love Kashmir.” That single order marked the beginning of Gyawun as a marketplace.

Since then, Gyawun has grown into a full-fledged platform, connecting lakhs of customers across the world with authentic Kashmiri craftsmanship — proudly carrying forward a family legacy that began in 1904.
